I got extremely lucky. I came home to Butch eating cereal out of the box and watching cartoons he recorded last night, or something that came on a different station. He barely noticed me coming through the door. He taunted, "Did you finally come back from your boyfriend's house?" I said, tiredly, "Thomas is missing. You know that." "Oh. Yeah." He said, a little sorry about what he said. "Candy's house then?" I thought about that. He just thought of a lie for me. "Yeah. I was hanging out with the others all day. Uh, hey. Where's Mom and Dad?" He pointed to the fridge. "There's a note. You didn't see it? They left before I woke up." I went over to it. It said that they were going shopping right after work, they won't be back till 9:00, we had to fend for ourselves tonight (that's our family joke, like we're on a desert island or something), behave yourselves, blah blah blah. Time it was written: 5:30. I left at six today.
OK. This is OK. It's three o'clock right now. As long as Butch goes to bed before they get home, he won't remember that I was gone all day today. Although, that means using all my time trying to get my homework done and not hanging out with my friends for real. I sighed. I guess you can't win them all.
I got a call from Devlin. Oh, just in time too, I was about to get started on my math. No real rush there. "Hey. What's up?" "Are you seeing the News?" He said, not saying hello. "What? What about the News?" "Someone is attacking the school!" "What?!" "They don't know who it is, but she's duking it out on everything! How do you not know about this?" "I was out taking down a Crime Lord! Helloooooooo?" "Get down there, quick!" I hung up. "No duh." I muttered. I called Candy and asked her to look after Butch. I ran downstairs and got my jacket. Butch said, "Where are you going?" I said, "Butch, listen bud. I need to go out for a minute. Candy is on her way to watch you. You know the emergency number?" He answered, "9-1-1. But--" "You know our address right?" "223140, Spartan Hills Road. But--" "I promise you when I get back I'll get you that new transformer on the TV. OK? Now please--" "Haley!" I stopped halfway out the door and I looked at him in surprise. "What?" I asked impatiently. He folded his arms. "Tell me where you're going or I'm telling Mom." I bit my lip. "School." I said. He looked at me disgustedly and said, "Oh. Your boring." He went to watch his cartoons and I went to save the school.
Or, what's left of it.
