"Here, take this." I turned to Dr. Richards. He decided to stay here and I would bring help for him to rebuild the reactor. We were about to leave when he stopped us. He gave me a pair of glasses, except that this pair of glasses looked high-tech and retro at the same time. I said, "Oooooh. Just what I wanted. I can cross that off my Christmas List!" He answered, "They will allow you to see whether or not a person has Positive or Negative Energy running through them. If you can help them before they ignite it, then there would be less damage, and it would also prevent casualties." I nodded and put them inside of my vest. I said, "You have a good heart, Doc. If it helps any." He lowered his head. "If I had a good heart, I wouldn't have helped in building this blasted thing." I put a hand on his shoulder. "Your trying to fix it now, that's all that matters." He looked at me and gave a half smile. "We'll be back, as soon as we can." He nodded. I grabbed a hold of Candy and left the base. We just got to Devlin's house and I got a call from my parents.
"Hello?" "Haley Juno Jones!" "Oh, hi Mom." "Don't you 'Hi' me little Missy! I am looking at your grades right now, on the computer, and I am seeing NHI's all over!" "Mom I--" "I want you home right now, doing your work. If I see another NHI when I check it again on Friday, you will be grounded for the rest of the month. No contact with the outside world. Cellphone, Computer, TV, and all that jazz. Do I make myself clear?" I can hear Butch snickering in the back round. I said in defeat, "Yes Ma'am." "Alright. How was your day at school?" I smiled a little. That was just like her. "It was fine. I'll see you home." "Love you, sweetie." "Mom." "Say it, hon." I whispered into the phone and wrapped my hand around the receiver and my mouth. "I Love you too, Mommy." She hung up.
God, she is embarrassing sometimes. I turned to Candy who smiled innocently. "Juno?" She asked. "That never happened." I said through gritted teeth. "Of Course it didn't. I can get Joe Joe out here to help with your work at your house." I shook my head and said, "No thanks, I appreciate it though. I'm done with most of the homework, but there are just one or two questions I need to finish." She nodded. "Call you later." She said. "Definitely." I said back. I flew off towards home.
When I came home, I came to a shocker. My parents stopped me and told me the news. "You what?" I said. "I got you a job." He repeated. "I heard you the first time, I mean, Why?" "Its time you learned how to be responsible. Plus, its not even a real job. It's more of a program where kids get to help other kids, less fortunate kids: only two days a week." I raised an eyebrow. "What is it, exactly?" My mom smiled. She said, "A child is signed up with a partner. You get to help him or her as a nurse. You'll get to know each other, and become friends." "Who is it?" I asked. Dad shrugged. "Don't know yet. Results are coming in through the mail." I nodded and I heard Butch's immature rantings. "Haley has a job! Haley has a job!" I looked at him. "Yeah, I have a job, I'm gonna get money in my pocket and when we pass the toy store, I am not buying you anything." That got him real quiet, real quick.
Of course, I knew that I was getting no money out of this.
