Well I was sold, if this guy is serious about helping out people like the guys back at the apartment, then I'm all for it. However, Dex wasn't buying it. He stared at the video intently. The rest of the party went on with a dance, a show with no other but a couple of acrobatic mutant twins, and then we just went home. I never saw Ares or Cleo anywhere for the rest of the night.
Maximus came out with his own date. He met up with us. "Ah, you must be Dexter. The young Ares told me all about you, and I always wondered what it was like to have a brilliant mind at your age." Dex nodded, "Thank you. Your proposal was....intriguing. However, it occurred to me that in order to perform such a miracle drug, you would have to have other test subjects. Am I right?" He cleared his throat, "Well, we spent enough time studying genetics, and we never actually tested it until we were 100% sure that it would not harm the host." Dexter nodded, as if he was impressed. He said, "Well, you see I've been studying genetics for a while, but I found that no matter what the tests, something rather, unpredictable happens." Maximus gave a look to Dexter. "Then you must not have the efficient equipment to study such." I could hear the hidden message underneath. Stay off of that subject, and you'll walk away just fine.
Dexter said nothing. Maximus just straightened his tie and said, "Well, I would love to continue this little chat, but I need to greet our other guests." With that, he left. I loosened my grip on Dexter's arm. I didn't even know I tightened it. Dexter was watching him intently as he walked away. I looked at him. "Dex? Dexter?" I said, a little worried. He then looked at me and his looked softened a little bit. He looked like he was in a trance. "Uh, yeah. Sorry, I'm just worried I guess." I nodded. He did have a point, for success there had to have been failures first. Failures he wouldn't want the public to see. I asked, "Should we......sneak off?" He shook his head. "No. Maximus is keeping a close eye on us. I say we get out of here now." I nodded. Maximus said to just get to the available helicopters and tell them where to drop you off. We left and we didn't really say a word to each other.
When we got home Dexter turned to me and said, "If you jepordize another mission like that again, I'll take back that all access code card to my lab. And we will no longer be allies any more, do you understand?" I slouched my shoulders. I really did jepordize the mission. All because I was a little jealous. "Yes." I muttered. He nodded and walked off to the stairs that led to his room. Before he went down he stopped. "Noel." He said. I turned to him. He wasn't looking at me. He said, "If it means anything, you look beautiful." With that he went to his room. OK. Maybe this wasn't a total loss. I went to my apartment and got ready for bed.
