OK. Where do I start? Um, I was at the usual hangout with my friends. The hangout was a rooftop on a six story apartment building on Dickson Avenue, the main street of Den-Martin, New Jersey. North of Virginia, South of Hoboken. My friends are probably the strangest group of friends out there. There's Candy: the fashion consultant, Joe Joe: the little punk who lives here and never stops eating, and Devlin: the peaceful giant.
Candy was my sister from another mister, if that makes sense. Even though she's a rocking black girl and I'm a pasty white girl. We grew up together, and shared everything together. Joe Joe, he's a real jerk, but he's also a good friend. He stuck up for anyone he could, and if you're a close friend, he made fun of you. I guess that's his way of saying he cares. Devlin was new around here a year ago. He is almost six feet tall, at fourteen! He enjoys reading books and learning about new things. Which seems rather unusual to me when he's that size.
I was leaning against the edge of the rooftop, Bored. Joe Joe was eating yet another bag of potato chips, Candy was working on her homework and occasionally trying to look off of Devlin's work. Devlin was already done, and sketching something on his pad.
Devlin checked his watch. "Hey guys, I gotta go. I promised my parents I'd clean up my room before they got home." He got up and left. Candy got a text. She said, "Ugh. I gotta go. My dad doesn't want me to miss out on dinner again." Joe Joe got up with her. "I'll go with ya." he said. "It gets a bit nasty in this area after dark." I nodded. "You go on ahead. I want to stay up here for a little while more." She smiled and nodded. She knew I liked being up here by myself. It was just so peaceful up here, it seems to clear my head.
They all left. A few minutes later I heard something behind me. I felt a little tremor shake the building. I spun around and looked at the distance. I saw a bunch of flashing lights outside the city. I saw little pieces of the light flying away from it, like fireworks. I leaned further to see what was happening. I slipped and fell.
As I was falling and screaming; I barely noticed one of those glowing things coming right at me. I braced my last impact with the Earth. I didn't feel it. I didn't feel the wind on my face anymore either. Did I die? I uncovered my face and looked around. I was in the middle of the air.
Oh. My. God. How am I doing this? I turned around to see if something caught me, or if I fell on something that broke my fall, but no. Here I am, in mid-air, nothing attached. Look Ma, No Hands! I thought about going up again, and I did. I stepped onto the rooftop again. I looked at my hands, smiled, and jumped off the building again. I soared through the air. I flew through the town, scaring half a million people to death.
I almost didn't realize what time it was. It was getting dark. I flew home and landed just outside the door. I took the whole "landing" thing slowly, so there wouldn't be evidence that I flew. I went inside.
My dining room can't exactly be seen from the doorway, I ran to my room and shut the door. My dad called out after me, "Hey, kiddo. You hungry?" I said back. "No, not really. I had a really rough day at school, I'm just gonna go to bed." They were probably looking at each other right now. My mom said, "OK. I'll just, wrap up your diner in case you get hungry. OK?" I was already in my room. I looked in the mirror. Hey! I wasn't wearing these clothes at the beginning of the day! And I never put my hair back with a ponytail either! Like ever! I hate my hair in a ponytail! What is going on?
I sat on my bed and looked at my lucky bracelet. I had it for as long as I can remember. It was a gift from my grandmother. It had a little button on it, and when you push it, it makes a clicking sound, which drives my little brother crazy. I always click it when I was nervous. I clicked it ounce and I was scared out of my mind when the little streamers of light started wrapping around my arm. It covered my body, and wrapped around my mouth, so I couldn't scream. Ounce I was completely covered, it disappeared. I was in my old clothes, again! That was weird. I tested it out again. I became that girl again, and back. I can use this, I can be like my own Superhero!
