The Fallen part 26: Epilogue

I sat there in front of the Attorney. He was looking over the papers over and over again. He said, "Alright everything seems to be in order. I just need you two to sign the last page and then we'll be done." I leaned forward and signed the emancipation documents. Herald did the same. His wife was sitting there as well, watching everything go down. She didn't have an expression to show.

Ounce the lawyer left I got the last of my things. I already passed my driver's license test, so I could drive the truck that was going to my new home. No thanks to that man. I put my box of personal items in the passenger seat. Herald said he put my inheritance in my bank account. He thinks of that as a way of apologizing, but that is not apologizing anything and I have yet to hear an actual one from him. I no longer wish to kill him, but I'm sure as hell I don't ever want to see him again. They stood in the doorway of their mansion. We didn't shake hands or say good bye or anything. That's just the way I wanted it. I drove off.

It was getting late. I would say where I was going, but that's a surprise. Don't worry, its a surprise to her too. I got to the house. I decided that I'll just finish with the rest of the furniture tomorrow. I already got the basics, a bed, a couch, a TV, ya know mandatory stuff. I left the truck in park, locked the car door behind me, and went to say hi to the Millers.

I knocked on the door. Nicole opened it and a face of sheer joy and excitement formed. "Gabe!" She said, astonished. I smiled. "Hey, Nicole! I just came over to surprise you!" I could see the parents just past her. I decided to have a little fun with them. "I'm moving in!" They all stared at me like I'd grown a second head. I continued, "To a house here. Right over there." I said pointing to the other side of the street. Also sounding like Mr. Miller the night they helped me. Nicole said, "Oh my God. Are you Serious? That's Great!" She said she tackled me with a big hug and gave me a kiss. She then backed off. That must have been embarrassing for her. I mean its not like I haven't kissed a girl before, but she is different from other girls. I went and gave her a hug. We broke, still in each others arms and we kissed. After a few minutes I heard Mr. Miller clear his throat. We broke and stepped back from each other. Both red as strawberries.

They insisted I'd stay for dinner. Mr. Miller said that as a friend he would get a bunch of friends to help me out. I tried to deny any help but they can be quite persuasive. I also told them I was inrolling in the same school as Nicole. She seemed to like that.

I got home and I heard a stranger's voice. "That's pretty noble of you, or should I say, what you didn't do." I spun around. Not even a day in my new home and I'm already getting burglars? "Don't worry," he said. "I'm not here to fight a hero. I'm here to give you a job." I didn't let my guard down. I said, "If you want me to work for you, then I need a face to identify over here." He stepped out of the living room. He was a six foot four male, with a white crew cut, and a face that said experience. He wore a generals clothing, badges, and boots. He said, "The name's Cutler. General Cutler. If you accept the job, its Sir." He handed me an envelope. I opened it and read it. I didn't believe what I read so I read it again. I said, "I never heard of anything like this." He nodded, "That's good. The superiors at Operation: Broadsword think you could be of some use to us." I thought about this. Yeah, I could get use to the whole 'Saving the World' thing.

With a grin on my face I said, "I'm in."

The End
