Cyrus/Fallen/81+1 Heroes Part 8: A Hero Makes Her Sacrifice

I was out of breath. The huffs were coming out in cloud banks, I had to be careful not to freeze the others. "Zero? Are you OK?" I looked over to Omega. Over her shoulder was Captain Carmine. He was looking at me too. I nodded. We only had two other soldiers left, out of nine. We made it to the cannon though. I can't afford to be tired now.

One of the soldiers looked up from the terminal he was at. "Sir! Someone activated the cannon already! As soon as it finishes cooling down, it'll fire and take out whatever is within range!" The Captain sighed. "Well, it's been a pleasure serving with you gentlemen and miss. It looks like we got to detonate it ourselves." He grabbed a rocket launcher one of the Knights was holding. I put a hand on his shoulder. "Easy, cowboy. There could be a different way to settle this. I'll just make a wall, or freeze something important to clog up the system." Omega spoke up. "The giant pumps the gun manually, and when they shoot it, the projectile is going at a speed of 300 miles per hour. There is no way to stop it unless we had enough of a discharge of energy to set off the projectile early." I looked at her. She then said, "Bishop wanted a somewhat educated weapon under his control." Carmine spoke. "That's a nice little science lesson miss, but that still means that one of us has to stay here." We stood in silence. Omega crossed her arms, "I'll stay. I'll charge enough energy to fire at the projectile. We have a higher percentage of succeeding if I stay and get the job done."

We said nothing. When it comes right down to it, she was right. Carmine says, "That's very honorable of you. Here, it doesn't mean much to you, especially not now, but you deserve it." He handed her a badge of Operation: Broadsword. She took it and smiled. "I am honored." She said. I faced her. "You are a true hero, but we can figure something out. Maybe we can, I don't know...." She interrupted me with a hug. "Just, please, honor my memory. I want to do this. The thought of my life lost, so that many others can live on, makes me feel.....pleasant. Believe me when I say, I cannot say that a whole lot about my life." She broke the hug halfway through the second sentence. I nodded. "The cannon will fire in about ten minutes. That's enough time for everyone to get off here." She nodded and then we both saluted to each other. I wanted to say something else to her, but I didn't know what to say. I left with the other three right behind me.

Omega watched as they left. Her life doesn't mean much out there, in the real world. She just hopes that history will remember her, as a great warrior, and a hero. She stepped into the inner muzzle of the cannon. She walked a bit down the muzzle. She turned to the way she came, and placed her hands about a foot apart from each other. She focused incredibly hard and formed a energy sphere in her hands. Now, she waits.
